Pregabalin Promotes Restful Sleep for Fibromyalgia Patients

One of the most irritating symptoms of Fibromyalgia is sleep deprivation and waking up unrested even after a whole night’s sleep. Patients are often fatigued due to constantly having no rest. Several medicines have been launched into the market to counteract these symptoms, but none have lived up to their name.

Symptoms and Pregabalin

Studies have now shown that Pregabalin has the potential to aid patients suffering from Fibromyalgia in finally getting much needed sleep. Patients normally complain about waking up midway between sleep cycles and feeling tired yet not sleepy, which decreases overall sleep time.

  • Patients undergoing treatment with Pregabalin exhibited significant improvement in all these aspects, highlighting its prospect as an effective Fibromyalgia medicine.

Fibromyalgia patients complain about symptoms ranging from stress, fatigue, restless sleeps, development of pressure sensitive tender points and heightened sensitivity to pain. Sleep deprivation has been linked towards damaging nervous pathways responsible for feeling pain, and in Fibromyalgia it causes abnormal processing of physical pain. Restful and longer sleep patterns have been proven to alleviate these symptoms and Pregabalin works in delivering just the thing.

Putting Pregabalin to the Test

An extensive study was conducted by Thomas Roth (PhD) and his colleagues from Sleep Disorders and Research Center at Henry Ford Health System, Detroit. In their research, they analyzed the effects of Pregabalin on Fibromyalgia patients and how it affected their sleep-wake patterns. The data they gathered was from multinational, multicenter, placebo-controlled test cases to have a large pool of test subjects from which to derive varying data.

The Experiment

The test individuals were divided in 2 equal groups from which one received Pregabalin (150 to 450 mg/day) dosage and the other was given a placebo for 14 days. After this the treatments were switched twice for 14 days each. There were taper periods of 2 weeks duration between each crossover.

Polysomnography (PSG) was performed on the test groups on 2 consecutive nights before and after each time treatments were switched. The researchers measured:

  • Total Sleep Time (TST)
  • Wake After Sleep Time (WASO)
  • Latency to Persistent Sleeping (LPS)
  • Slow Wave Sleep (SWS)
  • Time Period during each Sleep Stage
  • Number and Duration of Sleep bouts

The patients were requested to rate their pain on the numerical rating scale (NRS) that they had experience over the past 24 hours.

Researchers noted that from 119 Fibromyalgia patients from which 86.6% were female, the patients being administered Pregabalin had considerably reduced number of disturbances midway in their sleep cycles as compared to those who were given placebo. Sleep timings had also increased for Pregabalin group, which established a solid relationship between Pregabalin and improved sleep in Fibromyalgia patients.

Pregabalin for the win

The study proved that Pregabalin improved quality of sleep that Fibromyalgia patients experienced. Improvement was marked by lesser number of interruptions during sleep cycles and increased sleep duration. The treatment proved that Pregabalin has medical potential to aid patients who are plagued by pain, fatigue and restlessness in getting much needed sleep.
