Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment – Can it Be Used To Cure Fibromyalgia?

Being an absolute hurtlocker, Fibromyalgia can one hell of an ailment to diagnose due to its similarities with other common ailment such as fatigue, mood swings, short term memory loss and musculoskeletal pain. Living up to its notorious reputation, fibromyalgia has the potential to thrive in you until you start digging deeper to the point of unmasking it.

This is not the only scary thing you will read today about this disease, fibromyalgia is so common in the U.S that in every 1of 70, this hideous affiliate is there and mostly affecting women.

While the causes of fibromyalgia can range from as mild as emotional stress, to as severe as neurological infection and head trauma, there are still any theories and hypothesis waiting to be brought into the light.

Since the symptoms of fibromyalgia mostly incite pain in the patient’s body, the need for pain killers is imperative for someone suffering from it. In a recent study the researchers from Tel Aviv University have made a major breakthrough in the treatment for fibromyalgia. The study was conducted on hyperbaric oxygen inhaling which allowed patients especially women, to reduce their dependency on painkillers and even completely withdraw the need for medication to combat pain.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy or “HBOT” involves the inhalation of 100% oxygen that results in enhancement of the body’s healing factors. The therapy is conducted in a total body chamber that has controlled atmospheric pressure. The patients are provided seating arrangements and breathing apparatus attached to hyperbaric oxygen tanks for the procedure.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment has been quite the relief for patients suffering from fibromyalgia, however, doctors are rather interested in finding the culprit responsible for the disease. An initiative has brought several researchers from different universities to join their resources and study the prime cause of the illness, and to an extent they have found the suspect. The researchers are adamant that a disruption of brain mechanism triggers pain and allows it to process within the body.

“As a physician, the most important finding for me is that 70 percent of the patients could recover from their fibromyalgia symptoms”,  one of the top researchers Dr. Efrati said.

“The most exciting finding for the world of research, however, is that we were able to map the malfunctioning brain regions responsible for the syndrome.”

In many cases where the patient is suffering from decompression sickness, burns, CO poisoning and embolisms, this treatment is very effective. However, during the experimentation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, nearly 70% of the 60 women participants had gone through major changes in their brain activity.

From these experiments, Dr. Efrati did some major findings regarding how the brain reacts to painkiller medications and the hyperbaric oxygen treatment. He concluded that,

“The intake of [the pain medication they were taking] eased the pain but did not reverse the condition. But hyperbaric oxygen treatments did reverse the condition.”

He found several symptoms that indicated brain repair and regeneration and claimed that the future treatment can be a major game changer in the medical science for this disease. He added,

“Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are designed to address the actual cause of fibromyalgia – the brain pathology responsible for the syndrome.

It means that brain repair, including neuronal regeneration is possible even for chronic,long-lasting pain syndromes and we can and should aim for that in any future treatment development.”

Even though many patients are often skeptical behind the idea of inhaling of pure oxygen in pressurized tubes, this treatment is giving a lot of promising results and will eventually overpower the doubters with the passage of time.
