Darrell Eastlake’s wife Julie opens up on legendary sports caller’s Alzheimer’s battle

The wife of legendary sports caller Darrell Eastlake has opened up on her husband’s declining health.

Eastlake, who worked in television and radio for over four decades, has been battling Alzheimer’s disease and emphysema for the past six years, and his wife Julie has since moved him into an aged care home on the NSW Central Coast.

“It’s been so hard for me to tell him he can’t come home,” Mrs Eastlake told Nine Network’s A Current Affair.

“If he falls I can’t pick him up – and he has fallen so many times.”

Mrs Eastlake revealed her disappointment that she and her husband have not received much support: “He gets very down because he thinks he’s forgotten, but he’s not forgotten, he’s really and truly not,” she said.

“I’m very, very disappointed in a lot of people.

“No one phones me, no one comes near me. I go to the nursing home, I go home, that’s it.”

The hardest struggle, Mrs Eastlake says, has been watching her once spirited husband, who was once removed from the commentary floor at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games for his shrill commentary, fade before her eyes.

“I do a lot of crying when I leave the nursing home,” she said.

“I sit here and say to myself, ‘where’s my man gone?'”
